Adult ADHD Therapy & Psychotherapy in Ottawa & Ontario

ADHD can affect much more than attention.

For many adults, ADHD can affect organization, motivation, emotional regulation, relationships, time management, work, self-confidence and the ability to follow through on things that matter. You may know exactly what you need to do — and still struggle to get started.

I provide individual psychotherapy for adults with ADHD in Ottawa and virtually throughout Ontario. My approach combines practical strategies for everyday challenges with psychotherapy that explores the emotional and relational experience of living with ADHD.

After years of struggling with organization, procrastination, overwhelm or hearing variations of “you just need to try harder,” people can develop anxiety, self-criticism, shame or a sense that they are somehow failing. Therapy can address those experiences as well as the practical difficulties themselves.

Adult ADHD therapy may include support with:

• Organization, planning and time management

• Procrastination, task initiation and follow-through

• Emotional regulation and reactivity

• Overwhelm and decision fatigue

• Work, academic and life-transition challenges

• Anxiety and chronic stress

• Self-esteem and persistent self-criticism

• Relationship and communication difficulties

• Developing routines that are flexible and realistic

• Understanding your individual strengths, needs and patterns

A Practical and Therapeutic Approach

ADHD therapy doesn't have to be a choice between practical strategies and deeper psychotherapy. We can work with both.

Sessions are collaborative and tailored to what is happening in your life. At times that may mean developing concrete systems for organization, planning or follow-through. At other times, we may explore anxiety, emotional reactions, relationship patterns, self-esteem or experiences that have developed over many years.

My work draws from approaches including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness and practical ADHD-informed strategies. Rather than trying to force yourself into systems that repeatedly haven't worked, we can experiment with approaches that better fit the way you function.

ADHD and Relationships

ADHD can also affect relationships in ways that aren't always immediately recognized. Differences around organization, memory, time, household responsibilities, emotional regulation and follow-through can gradually create frustration or misunderstanding between partners.

Individual psychotherapy can help you understand these patterns and develop different ways of responding to them. When relationship difficulties are a larger part of the concern, I also provide Gottman-informed couples therapy.
